Vessel tonnage coming to Aliağa for ship dismantling has increased by more than 45 percent in the first quarter. Within the framework of the new emission targets of the EU, younger and bigger vessels are coming to dismantling. The sector has also raised its year-end target.
Turkey’s ship dismantling centre, Aliağa, where the works increased due to Pandemic, will not ease down this year as well. Vessel tonnage coming to Aliağa for ship dismantling has increased by more than 45 percent in the first quarter compared to the same period last year. Within the framework of the new emission targets of the EU, younger and bigger vessels are coming to dismantling.
In the first quarter of 2021, 30 vessels of various types weighing 232 thousand tons of steel have come to Turkey’s ship dismantling centre, Aliağa. These vessels came mainly from European countries such as Greece, the Netherlands, Italy, and Norway. In 2020, 32 vessels weighing 157 thousand tons of steel came for ship dismantling. Although there has not been a significant change in the number of vessels that came for ship dismantling, the large increase in tonnages is noteworthy. Bigger vessels come to ship dismantling now. Also, the age of the vessels coming for the ship dismantling is young. The EU’s Green Consensus agenda and the new emission targets of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have also been effective in this.
