Sanmar Shipyard delivered Canada’s first LNG dual-fuel tug, Haisea Kermode, to Haisea Marine.
Sanmar Shipyard announced that it had delivered Canada’s first LNG-fueled tug, Haısea Kermode. Haisea Kermode shall soon be joined by its sister tug, Haisea Warrior, to form a five-strong fleet of three Sanmar-built electrically powered, emission-free ElectRA harbour tugs.
Based on the RAstar 4000 DF design by Vancouver-based naval architect Robert Allan Ltd, the two Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugs are among the world’s highest-performing escort tugs.
In a statement released by Sanmar, it was reported that these tugs, which had a length over of 40.20 m, 16.00 m and have a maximum draft of 7.10 m and a draft of more than 100 tons, should form an indirect escort force of approximately 200 tons.
Haisea Kermode has a diesel exhaust after-treatment system that can run on diesel or LNG and complies with IMO Tier III emission standards, the most stringent standard in the international maritime industry.
The tug’s ability to perform long-distance escort missions using only LNG is a significant advance in terms of sustainability, as it leads to a significant reduction in emissions compared to conventional diesel tugs of the same power.
Ali Gürün, Chairman of the Board of Sanmar Shipyards, said, “The fact that such a powerful tugboat has such impressive environmental features is a good example of how technological progress and innovation can pave the way for a sustainable and environmentally friendly future for our industry. As Sanmar, we are proud to be at the forefront of these advancements.”
