53 ships have arrived in Aliağa, which has become Europe’s major ship dismantling hub, for demolition in 2021.
Adem Şimşek, Chairman of the Aliağa Branch of Chamber of Shipping (IMEAK), stated that the ship dismantling facilities in Aliağa, İzmir, are on their way to becoming Europe’s hub of dismantling. He added that during the pandemic, many ships were sold to other facilities in the region for being dismantled and that in 2021, 53 were dismantled in the facilities in the region.
Expressing that Aliağa has eight shipbuilding sites on the Ship Dismantling List approved by the European Commission in Aliağa, Şimşek claimed that this number would increase to 11 in the coming period.
Stating that European ship owners prefer Aliağa for their ship dismantling, Adem Şimşek said that he believed European ships arriving in Turkey would reach 90% by the end of 2022.
