Panama Canal Authority Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales announced a plan to implement a green vessel classification system whereby the vessels passing through the canal will be classified according to their energy efficiency and will be subject to an emission charge accordingly.
Speaking at the AAPA Latino Conference in Colombia, Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, Administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, announced the authority’s plan to implement a green vessel classification system that will include a new greenhouse gas (GHG) emission charge.
Within the scope of the application, which aims to make the operations in the canal carbon neutral, all vessels exceeding 38.1 meters in total length will be classified according to their energy efficiency level.
The fee amounts and the schedule have not yet been announced yet.
